Electricity and water

Electrical appliances and water are a very lethal combination.

  • Keep appliances well away from sinks or tubs of water. If a plugged-in appliance falls into water or you touch an appliance with wet hands or while standing in water, you risk severe electric shock and possibly death.
  • Never use any electrical appliances – including radios, and hair dryers - near sinks, toilets or bathtubs. (If you want to listen to music, use a small, battery-powered radio.)
  • Always dry your hands before touching electric appliances.
  • Keep the floor around your washer and dryer clean and dry.
  • Unplug small appliances when washing them. Never immerse appliances such as rice cookers in water. You could damage them and get a fatal electric shock the next time you use them.
  • Never use water to put out a fire on your stove or microwave. Keep a fire extinguisher close to your kitchen – and know how to use it. If a grease or electric fire breaks out, use baking soda on it, or if a pan is on fire, smother the flames with a lid.

Baking soda is an effective way to put out a small grease fire. Keep a full box handy in your kitchen.
