Play Safe Stay Safe

  • Never build tree forts or climb in trees where there are wires. Sometimes the wires are positioned directly through trees.
  • Never play on or near electrical transformers (they look like big Green Boxes). Those green boxes are not playground equipment.
  • Always choose a safe area away from power lines to fly kites and model airplanes. The string on the kite can become conductive. Another object that is very conductive is a helium metallic balloon.
  • Stay out of transformer stations. If a toy or a kite accidentally goes inside the fenced area, have your parents call London Hydro at 661-5555 and have us remove it. Remember, the signs on the fence that say “DANGER, HIGH VOLTAGE, KEEP OUT” are there for your safety. Read it and obey it - always.
  • If your pet climbs a hydro pole or a tree near power lines, don’t be dared or encouraged by anyone to try to rescue the animal. Try calling your pet down to the ground or tempt them to come down with some food.
  • Stay away from fallen power lines. Always treat the wire as if it is alive, even if it doesn’t look like it. The wire doesn’t have to be sparking and moving around to be alive.
  • If toast becomes lodged in a toaster, never use a utensil to remove it. Ask an adult for help and always unplug the appliance before attempting to remove a lodged object.
  • Stay out of and away from water (swimming areas, baths, and showers) during a lightning storm.
  • If you are caught outdoors, don’t stand near tall objects like trees and utility poles. If you are unable to take shelter in your home or vehicle, and are in an open area crouch down on the ground in a small ball.
  • Stay away from open metal vehicles such as bicycles, golf carts, farm equipment and motorcycles, and objects such as clotheslines and wire fences. Don’t carry items such as umbrellas, golf clubs, and fishing rods.
