Hot forecast, remember to conserve energy where possible

June 24, 2005 - London, Ontario

London Hydro reminds Londoners to conserve electricity where possible. The extended forecast indicates that hot humid weather will be around for the next few days, which means an increase in electricity consumption as air conditioners are in full operation.

Earlier today, Ontario Power Generation Corporation announced that it was necessary to shut down two units at the Nanticoke Generating Station and more could follow. Each unit produces approximately 500 MW of electricity. (London Hydro’s record peak demand is approximately 680 MW).

By conserving electricity, we can all do our part to reduce the total consumption in the province and take the strain off the power grid.

As temperatures are expected to climb over the weekend, London Hydro encourages all Londoners to use energy wisely. Simple measures can go a long way to reducing overall consumption and your electricity bill.

Consider, setting the air conditioner a few degrees higher and closing the drapes during the day to keep the warm sunlight out. Use ceiling fans to help circulate the air and help make air conditioning units operate more efficiently. Consider barbecuing or eating cold meals and salads instead of using the oven.
