Record Peak In London Set Yesterday

June 28, 2005 - London, Ontario

A new record for electricity usage was set yesterday in London. In the hot humid conditions yesterday, London Hydro’s peak demand reached an all time high of 704.2 MW.

The last record was set August 8, 2001 at 680.5 MW. The province also reached peak levels yesterday and the IESO issued a notice last evening asking all consumers to help reduce the electricity load.

As temperatures are expected to climb again today, London Hydro urges all Londoners to do their part and conserve where possible.

Simple measures can go a long way to assist in reducing the strain on the Province’s electricity grid and reduce your electricity bill.

The extended forecast indicates that hot humid weather will be around for the next few days, which means an increase in electricity consumption as air conditioners are in full operation.

Consider, setting the air conditioner a few degrees higher and closing the drapes during the day to keep the warm sunlight out. Use ceiling fans to help circulate the air and help make air conditioning units operate more efficiently. Shifting usage of major appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers, and pool pumps until after 8 p.m. would also be helpful.

London Hydro has reduced the usage in our office buildings by adjusting air conditioning to higher temperatures and shutting off all unnecessary light where natural light is available. The business community in London is encouraged to take similar action to help reduce electricity usage during this extreme weather.
