Indoor Water Saving Tips
These simple tips can help you prevent your hard-earned money from going down the drain.
Indoors
- Beware of leaking faucets. In most cases, repair is as easy as replacing a washer.
- Replace old faucets with new, low-flow brands.
- A shorter shower can save litres of water per minute.
- Bathe small children together.
- Don’t let the water run while doing your dishes, cleaning vegetables, brushing teeth, shaving, etc.
- Toilets can have an undetected leak. Find out if yours leaks by adding a little food colouring to the tank and wait half an hour. If the colour shows up in the bowl, you have a leak.
- Check to see if your plumbing has any undetected leaks by recording your water meter reading before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the numbers are different, you have a leak.
- A toilet dam or water displacement device can help reduce the amount of water used with each flush. Replace old toilets with new, low-volume units.
- Keep drinking water in the fridge instead of letting the tap run until the water is cold.
Only 1% of the water delivered to your home is actually used for drinking!
