Outdoor Water Saving Tips
- Most of us water our lawns too much. A good rule of thumb to follow is to step on your grass. If it doesn’t spring back after you remove your foot, then it probably needs to be watered.
- Water your lawn only on the days and times allowed.
- The early morning or late evening are the best times to water.
- Do not water your lawn on windy days – up to 40% of the water intended for your grass is lost due to evaporation.
- Check sprinkler systems for leaks.
- Make sure your sprinklers aren’t spraying water where it isn’t needed, like the driveway, sidewalk, or street.
- Don’t cut your grass too short. This makes the roots work harder, and you’ll have to water your lawn more frequently.
- Learn about and practice xeriscaping, a landscaping method that uses drought-tolerant plants and flowers and mulch to hold in moisture.
- Use a broom to clean your driveway instead of a hose.
- Wash the car with water in a bucket, and rinse using a hose with a low-flow nozzle.
Your lawn only needs 1 inch of water a week, including rain fall.
