Questions You Should Ask

If you are currently a London Hydro customer but are considering signing up with a new energy retailer, you should consider a few things. One of the most critical things is to make sure the retailer has a license from the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to sell electricity.

Then, before you sign a contract, read it carefully so you're aware of all the terms and conditions. Ask questions about anything that is unclear. You should certainly make sure you get the following information:

  • Does the retailer have a licence from the OEB and can they prove it? Ask to see it and verify that it’s valid for your area.
  • What is the company’s background and what experience does it have in selling electricity.
  • What price is it charging for electricity and how does it compare to the price you’re currently paying.
  • What is the start date and the length of the contract?
  • How can you cancel the contract, and what penalties or service charges would apply?
  • What charges are included in the rate offered?
  • What is the price per kilowatt hour, and will it vary?
  • Are there any additional charges?
  • Am I entitled to receive any Ontario Power Generation rebates that may be available?

Remember – you do not have to choose a new retailer. You can decide to do nothing and your electricity will continue to be supplied by London Hydro through the Regulated Price Plan. So take your time and shop around, compare offers, and ask questions about the terms of electricity service. There is no deadline for making a decision.

Important:You cannot enter into a contract with an electricity retailer if your London Hydro account is past due. Before you sign on with an electricity retailer, please ensure payment for your London Hydro account is up to date, otherwise your application for an alternate electricity supplier cannot be processed.
