Energy Retailer

On May 1, 2002, the electricity market in Ontario was opened to market competition, giving you the freedom to select your electricity supplier. You may choose to do nothing and have London Hydro continue to supply your electricity at the Regulated Price Plan Rate, or you may wish to sign a contract with an energy retailer. The choice is always yours to make and there is also no deadline for making a decision.

1. Regulated Price Plan through London Hydro - Is available to all customers, and ensures that all customers are supplied with electricity.
   Under the regulated price plan, the Ontario Energy Board sets two prices for your electricity consumption. The two-tiered pricing structure is influenced by a rate threshold. The rate threshold is higher during the winter season and lower during the summer months. During the summer season (May 1, 2008 through October 31, 2008), customers will be billed at a rate of 5.0 cents per kilowatt hour for the first 600 kilowatt hours per month and at 5.9 cents per kilowatt hour for consumption that exceeds the 600 kilowatt hour summer rate threshold.
2. Electricity Retailer - numerous companies have been licensed by the Ontario Energy Board to offer fixed rate, fixed term contracts to supply electricity. This competition gives you the opportunity to compare rates and offers, and sign a contract with the electricity retailer of your choice. Remember, electricity retailers are quoting only on the commodity price of electricity, which appears in the "Electricity Charge" portion of your bill. All the other regulated charges on your bill - including Delivery Charges, Regulatory Charges and Government Charges such as the Debt Retirement Charge, and Distribution Charge - are not included in their rates. It is also important to note that these companies are independent, private energy marketers that do not have any affiliation with London Hydro.
