Temperature Levels
You may be able to save even more money by making a few simple lifestyle changes. First, reset the thermostat. Home heating and cooling accounts for approximately 60 per cent of your energy costs. Although temperature levels are a matter of individual choice, these recommended temperatures will keep your family comfortable and use energy wisely:
18°C (64°F) – when sleeping
16°C (61°F) – when no one is at home
Depending on how well your house is insulated, you may have the potential to save 4-6% of the fuel used for each 1°C the thermostat is set below 20°C.
If your thermostat is set above 20°C, consider this fact:
- For every degree the thermostat is set above 20°C, your heating costs rise about 5%.
To save money on air conditioning costs, try to keep your thermostat at 26°C. Each degree below 26°C will increase your energy costs significantly. Turn off your air conditioner when you are not home.
Other energy-saving tips:
- Decrease energy waste by closing heat registers in unused rooms and closing the door.
- Wear a sweater instead of turning up the thermostat.
Heating your home above 20°C, costs you 5% extra for each 1°.
