London, ON – Today London Hydro is announcing the Plus Pilot, a new energy conservation project that will give 100 customers smart home devices to test leading-edge energy management tools. These tools are aimed at giving participants a predictable bill while lowering the carbon footprint of their homes, all within a comfort profile they select. These tools will provide:

  • a simulated* hourly rate, based on the province’s demand for electricity;
  • a predictable e-bill using the hourly rate;
  • access to virtual shares of community solar and battery; and
  • the ability to connect and manage devices and appliances through the new Trickl Plus app.

To build on the success of the Green Button initiative and recent smart home pilots, London Hydro has partnered with Sidewalk Labs to explore new energy management solutions and continue its track record of innovation. “This partnership allows both companies to capitalize on our joint strengths to push the boundaries of traditional electricity services,” said Syed ‌Mir,‌ ‌VP‌ ‌Corporate‌ ‌Services‌ ‌and‌ ‌CIO, London Hydro. “Projects like this help London Hydro to continue to provide its customers with new solutions to help them better manage their electrical needs.”

Sidewalk Labs is an urban innovation company working to make cities more sustainable and affordable for all. “Neighbourhoods of the future will require renewable energy resources, energy storage options, and demand management tools all working together to shift our energy use to times when there is less impact on the electrical grid and environment. We believe this pilot will help demonstrate a path to this more sustainable future,” said Rebecca Craft, Director Sustainability - Electrification, Sidewalk Labs.

Select participants will receive Smart Home appliances from LG Canada that will integrate with the new Trickl Plus mobile app, a London Hydro developed energy management application built specifically for the Plus Pilot. The integration between the appliances and Trickl Plus will help participants automatically shift their use to hours when community electricity demand and the simulated hourly rate is lower, increasing their opportunity for a predictable bill and lower carbon footprint.

The Plus Pilot is an opportunity for participants to explore a new approach to reducing electricity demand during peak periods, when utility costs and greenhouse gas emissions are higher. London Hydro customers interested in participating in this pilot can send an email to lhpilot@londonhydro.com.

*Participants’ electricity rates will not change.

Participants will still be charged according to the provincial rates.
