London, ON

As stacked townhouse developments continue to grow in popularity, London Hydro and the London Home Builders’ Association are reaffirming their commitment to supporting the expansion of affordable residential housing in London. In collaboration with builders and developers, London Hydro will now provide services to stacked townhouse units under the residential expansion category, rather than the general service connection category as previously outlined in the Multifamily Residential Dwellings (update dated September 12, 2024).

This shift will enable builders to access rebate savings, reducing costs.

"We were incredibly appreciative for the opportunity to meet with London Hydro leadership to share first-hand feedback on the impact the change from residential service to general service had for stacked townhomes, a product whose popularity is growing rapidly. Our members are grateful for the quick change to return stacked townhomes to residential service in ongoing efforts to partner to help maintain housing affordability for residential housing in London." Jared Zaifman, CEO, London Home Builders' Association.

A stacked townhouse is a multi-unit residential building where individual homes are “stacked” vertically, typically featuring separate entrances for each unit. Unlike traditional side-by-side townhouses, stacked townhouses include one or more units built on top of others, often with ground-level and upper-level suites. This style of development offers a more space-efficient and affordable housing option while maintaining a low-rise, residential feel.

This change reflects London Hydro’s and the London Home Builders’ Association’s ongoing efforts to streamline service delivery and better align with the City’s evolving housing needs.

“London Hydro values its strong relationships with community partners such as the London Home Builders’ Association, as we share a common goal of delivering affordable housing to Londoners,” noted Allan Van Damme, Vice President, Engineering & Construction.  “Through this collaboration, we recently developed an efficient approach to servicing a new housing configuration, while returning all surplus revenues to the building community.”

As always, builders with costing inquiries related to their servicing, please contact London Hydro’s Engineering Department at 519-661-5800 Ext. 5232.
