Somerset Ridge – Underground Cable Replacement

London Hydro is completing planned underground electrical system upgrades in the Somerset Ridge neighbourhood as part of its ongoing subdivision rehabilitation program. This project will replace aging underground cable and upgrade select equipment to improve system reliability, safety, and long-term performance for the community.

Project at a glance

  • Location: Somerset Ridge subdivision

  • Type of work: Underground primary cable replacement and equipment upgrades

  • Construction methods: Directional drilling for new duct installation, with excavation at select locations for equipment and connections

  • Target completion: By December 2026 (weather and site conditions permitting)

Why this work is happening

This subdivision was selected based on cable testing and London Hydro’s asset sustainment planning, which considers reliability, safety, risk, and the age of underground infrastructure. The existing 27.6 kV underground system is being replaced to reduce the risk of future failures and improve overall service reliability.

What work is included

The project includes:

  • Directional drilling of new duct within the subdivision and installation of new underground cable

  • Replacement and upgrade of select transformers to modern, switchable-style units

  • Upgrades to underground equipment, including cable terminations, services, risers, and related infrastructure

  • Associated civil and electrical work, including manholes/vault bases, street lighting interfaces, and restoration

What residents can expect during construction

Traffic, parking, and access

  • Temporary lane restrictions or short-term driveway access changes may be required in active work areas.

  • Construction equipment and materials may be staged on roadways or boulevards.

  • Access for emergency services will always be maintained.

Noise and vibration

Directional drilling, excavation, and electrical construction work can create intermittent noise and vibration near work zones. Crews will work to minimize disruption where possible.

Power interruptions

Some brief planned power interruptions may be required to safely complete electrical connections. When outages are necessary, affected residents will be notified in advance whenever possible.

Trees, landscaping, and restoration

  • Landscaping and tree removal may be required in limited areas to allow safe access for construction.

  • All disturbed areas (including lawns, boulevards, and hard surfaces) will be restored as closely as possible to their original condition once work is complete. Final restoration timing may depend on season and weather.
