We're upgrading the electrical system in your neighbourhood
London Hydro is improving the underground electrical system in the Colony Estates subdivision to provide safe, reliable electricity service for years to come.
Construction is expected to begin in September 2026 and will take approximately 10 weeks to complete.
This project will replace aging underground cables and transformers with modern electrical equipment that meets today’s standards.

Work will take place throughout the Colony Estates subdivision within City of London road allowances and registered easements.
Customers may see construction along the road in front of their homes and, in some cases, on their property. If access to private property is required, arrangements will be made with the property owner.Why is this work needed?
The underground primary cables in this neighbourhood have reached the end of their expected service life.
This project will:
- Improve the safety and reliability of electricity service.
- Replace aging underground electrical cables.
- Replace most of the pad-mounted transformers in the neighbourhood.
- Relocate high-voltage equipment within City road allowances and registered easements.
- Upgrade the neighbourhood’s electrical system for the future.
What work will you see?
Construction will happen in stages.
Installing underground electrical ducts
Crews will install underground pipes, called ducts, along roads and, where needed, within registered easements on private property.
Whenever possible, crews will use directional drilling to reduce digging and limit disruption. Some locations may still require open trenches because of site conditions.
Work at each specific location is expected to last no more than a few days.
Installing new underground electrical cables
Once the ducts are in place, crews will pull new electrical cables through them.
You may see construction vehicles and cable-pulling equipment working along the road and boulevard during this stage.
Replacing pad-mounted transformers
Most of the pad-mounted transformers in the subdivision will be replaced.
Some transformers are located within City boulevards, while others are located within registered easements on private property. If property access is required, arrangements will be made with the property owner.
A crane may be needed to remove and replace transformers located in backyards or side yards.
Planned power outages
A short, planned power outage will be required when an existing transformer is replaced.
Customers affected by a planned outage will receive at least 48 hours’ notice. A notification card will be delivered to your mailbox, so please check it regularly during construction.
Property restoration
We know construction can be disruptive.
When work is finished, affected areas will be restored to their pre-construction condition following applicable restoration standards.
Restoration timing will depend on the weather, site conditions and crew availability.
London Hydro will water newly installed sod for the first 30 days. After that, property owners will be responsible for continuing to water the sod.
What to expect during construction
While work is underway, you may notice:
- Construction vehicles and equipment
- Temporary digging or directional drilling
- Workers along roads, boulevards and registered easements
- Workers on private property where access is required
- Short-term noise, dust and other construction activity
- Temporary driveway interruptions
Driveway access will be maintained whenever possible. If a temporary closure is required, it will be coordinated with the property owner or resident in advance.
Our crews will work to keep disruptions as short as possible while completing the work safely.
